Nigeria’s Annual Education Conference (NAEC): 2016

The Federal Ministry of Education (FME) will hold the second Nigeria’s Annual Education Conference in the Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Abuja Hotel, on 8th November 2016. This conference provides the opportunity to communicate research evidence to help guide basic education policy and practice at the Federal and State level. It brings together stakeholders across the education and policy sector.

His Excellency, the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, will give the Keynote address.

Professor Kwame Akyeampong (University of Suusex, UK) will present the lead paper.

FME’s partners in education, Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), the UK Department for International Development (DFID) Education Projects (EDOREN, ESSPIN, GEP, DEEPEN and TDP), The British Council, World Bank Education Projects (NIPEP and SEPTIP), and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) are sponsoring the 2016 conference.

The Conference theme is Learning Opportunities for All: The Critical Role of Teachers. A carefully selected team of experts with diverse engagements with basic education (as political office holders, policy implementers, education practitioners, researchers, investors in education) will lead discussions on the following subthemes in three parallel sessions:

Subtheme 1. Improving the quality of teaching: a ten-year agenda will project the needs of the basic education teaching force by 2025. Dr Nguyan Feese the National Programme Manager of the Teacher Development Programme will convene the panel.

Subtheme 2. Developing a coherent, systemic approach to managing teachers effectively will interrogate issues of distribution, recruitment, deployment, and remuneration. Dr Terry Allsop, an EDOREN consultant with many years of experience in teacher education policy and practice, will convene the panel.

Subtheme 3: Rebuilding education services in emergencies: the role of, and support for teachers will explore the current capacity of teachers to support children’s return to school and learning in periods of emergency such as the case in northeast Nigeria. The panel, which will be convened by Mr. Ayo Oladini, will discuss the roles of volunteer and professional teachers in times of emergency, examine lessons from experiences in Northeast Nigeria, and look at ways of providing appropriate support.

The conference is deigned to contribute to teacher policy. Participants will be encouraged to sign into a community of practice on Evidence for policy and practice of basic education (EPPED) and to continue the dialogue on basic education reform in Nigeria.

Attendance is restricted to education political office holders, policy makers, researchers, educators, investors in education, and all those involved in guiding the direction of basic education in Nigeria.

However, everyone is welcome to join the conversation by sending articles, opinions and ideas in form of blogs to the Evidence for policy and practice of basic education (EPPED) forum (). Accepted contributions will be published in the EPPED Listserv.
