Participatory Management and Productivity among Secondary School Teacdhers in South West Nigeria

Abstract:

This study investigated the relationship between teachers’ participation in school management and their productivity in South West Nigerian Secondary Schools. The study is significant because it would assist policy makers, school administrators, teachers and parents on how the productivity of secondary school teachers could be improved through participatory management. Through the study, the reading community will be able to ascertain the extent to which secondary school teachers participate in school management and their level of productivity. The descriptive research design of the survey type was used. The population consisted of all teachers and all principals in the public secondary schools in South West Nigeria. The sample comprised 1,000 teachers and 100 principals from 100 selected secondary schools from south west Nigeria. Multi stage, simple and purposive sampling techniques were used to select the sample for the study. Two self-designed instruments tagged “Participatory Management Questionnaire (PMQ)” and “Teachers’ Productivity Questionnaire(TPQ)” were used to collect the data for the study. The data collected analysed using frequency counts, percentage scores, multiple regression, and pearson product moment correlation. The study revealed that there was significant relationship between teachers’ productivity was significantly related to teachers’ participation in school management and their productivity. It was also revealed that teachers productivity was significantly related to teachers’ participation in school finance; conflict resolution, planning and maintenance of school plant; examination matter; disciplinary matter; formulation of policy, scheme of work and school time table. The study also revealed that there was significant contribution of teacher’s productivity. Based on the findings; it was recommended that principals of secondary schools should ensure that teachers are allowed to actively participate in all aspects of school management to enhance higher productivity
